Project planning

Edge or central server? Choosing an integration location

Base placement on network dependencies, operational ownership and recovery needs rather than deployment trends.

Begin with the data flow

When source and destination are in the same plant, a central plant server may be sufficient. Consider edge placement when local processing must continue during WAN outages or plants need operational independence. Draw the network dependencies of each flow first. Mark direction and access boundaries between shop-floor and enterprise networks. Moving a box to the edge of a diagram does not make it resilient by itself; the storage, restart and failure behaviours still need to be designed.

Account for operational work

Every additional edge node needs updates, certificates, backups, monitoring and physical-access ownership. Central deployment may simplify management with fewer nodes but can create a wider failure impact. Establish which team can respond and during which hours. Time an actual recovery after hardware loss. Containers do not remove these responsibilities. Include how configuration is versioned, how secrets are supplied and how drift between plants will be detected.

Validate versions and connectors

Check the manufacturer's current requirements for OPC Router Windows and Docker deployment options. Confirm each required plug-in in the selected environment, including external drivers or SDKs. Do not assume an SAP or database connection that works in one environment uses identical installation steps in another. Include licensing, certificate storage and persistent data directories in the deployment plan. Test an upgrade with a rollback path before scheduling production changes.

Build a decision table

Compare network-outage behaviour, expected load, retention, monitoring, backups, maintenance windows and operational ownership for both options. Measure bottlenecks in a pilot using actual data and failure scenarios. In a multi-plant design, keep site identity and local exceptions separate from shared templates. The final architecture should be an operational decision supported by tests. Avoid choosing a distributed topology unless its benefits justify the additional systems that must be maintained over the deployment's lifetime.
