Separate an alarm from a diagnosis
A vibration or temperature threshold crossing is not, by itself, a diagnosis of a specific failure. Define the first application as condition monitoring and leave assessment to the maintenance team. Consider sensor quality, operating mode and engineering units alongside the alarm rule. A rule suitable when a machine is stopped may not be suitable during production. Measure false-alarm burden before adding more thresholds, and give the team a way to record why an alarm was dismissed.
Give each event a lifecycle
Store equipment, start time, triggering measurement, threshold and state for each event. Update an existing event while the condition persists instead of opening a work order for every sample. Hysteresis and minimum-duration rules can reduce alarm storms around a threshold. Choose their values with the equipment and process owner rather than applying a universal setting. Define acknowledgement, active, recovered and closed states explicitly so a recovered measurement does not silently erase an unresolved maintenance task.
Store the maintenance system response
When CMMS or SAP PM returns a work-order identifier, associate it with the source event. Define separate handling for permission denials, missing equipment codes and planned-maintenance periods. Resending after a network outage must not create another work order. Check whether the destination supports a unique source-event field or a query before retry. An operator acknowledging an alarm and a maintenance job being completed are different events and should remain distinguishable.
Measure operational usefulness
Pilot measures can include confirmed-alarm rate, duplicate work orders, time from alarm to assessment and missing equipment mappings. These measure the quality of the maintenance workflow; they do not automatically establish predictive-maintenance accuracy. Version rule changes and record which assets use each version. Review false alarms regularly to identify data and process improvements. Keep the system useful to technicians by providing enough context to act, rather than simply increasing the volume of notifications.
